Becoming a Fortune Best Company

Global Entertainment Systems

A large international corporation, Global Entertainment Systems (GES) had been nominated as a potential “Best Company to Work For” by Fortune Magazine. Attaining this distinction is no small feat, as it involves a thorough, multi-step assessment of a company’s culture. When the list of the Top 100 Companies was announced, GES was unfortunately not among them. Vice President of Human Resources Steven Lerner wanted to know why.

Steven hired Joelle to help his team analyze the data they received back from the Fortune Magazine assessment. She worked closely with Steven to design a process by which team members could effectively draw conclusions from the data, identify themes, and create a direction for improving the culture. Steven also wanted to use the opportunity as a time to grow his team’s strategic thinking skills.

Joelle facilitated two full-day meetings with the Human Resources team to accomplish this goal. With so much data, as well as a very strong, diverse team and multiple goals for the meetings, the project required sophisticated collaboration with a minimum of distraction. Joelle helped the team develop clear goals, stay focused, and ultimately produce a clear, quality plan for improving the culture of the corporation based on the data they received. Moreover, Joelle facilitated a reflective debriefing of the group process and individual contributions to support Steven’s intention to use the project as a learning experience for his team members. A potentially confusing meta-level objective, Joelle made the learning for the team simple and effective.

As a result of the project, the GES Human Resources department gained a heightened awareness of their culture. They came to understand where GES excelled and where it fell short. They identified areas of the most impact and completed a plan for improving the culture throughout the company—an effort which, according to the Fortune Magazine research on which the project was based, would have a significant impact on the company’s success overall. Additionally, the Human Resources team became a stronger force in the company with refined skills in strategic thinking, data analysis, and commitment to their vision.
